Worldwide - 14 Countries Have Marriage Equality

#2010 – Argentina - same-sex marriage
2009 – Ireland – civil unions - some, but not all of the rights and benefits of marriage.
2005 – Switzerland - registered partnership - same rights as marriage except for fertility treatments, adoption and surname rights.
#2005 – United Kingdom - Civil Partnership Act (same-sex marriage *) applies to England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland
#2005 – Canada - same-sex marriage
#2005 - Spain - same-sex marriage
2004 – New Zealand – civil unions - some, but not all of the rights and benefits of marriage.
2004 - Luxembourg – civil partnerships - some, but not all of the rights and benefits of marriage.
2003 – Croatia - civil unions - some, but not all of the rights and benefits of marriage.
#2003 – Belgium same-sex marriage
#2001 – Portugal - Civil unions were extended to same-sex couples (same-sex marriage)
2001 – Germany - Life Partnerships - do not receive the full benefits of marriage.
2001 - Finland - registered partnership - cannot take on surnames or adopt.
#1999 – France - (PACS) or “Civil Solidarity Pacts” PACS are afforded some rights and benefits of marriage. *
#1999 – South Africa – civil unions. Upgraded in 2006 to same-sex marriage.
#1998 – Netherlands – registered partnerships. Upgraded in 2001 - the first nation to legalize same-sex marriage.
#1996 – Iceland - registered partnerships - granted the full rights of marriage – in 2010 the registered partnership term was dropped for full marriage equality (same-sex marriage).
1996 – Hungary - economic and sexual relationship are granted medical, funeral, pension and immigration rights. Upgraded in 2009 - giving all of the rights of marriage except adoption and surname rights.
#1995 – Sweden - registered partnerships. Upgraded in 2009 – same-sex marriage
#1993 - Norway – civil unions. Upgraded in 2009 – same-sex marriage
1989 – Denmark - civil unions - most, but not all, of the same rights and benefits of marriage.
