Gay News Magazine Headlines (T24T-2)

News:

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) announced today that an arrest has been made in connection with the stabbing attack of a transgender woman in D.C.'s Fort Stanton neighborhood.

The woman, who was stabbed up to 40 times and suffered injuries to her back, hands and chest, including a punctured lung, was attacked in an abandoned house in the 3000 block of Stanton Road SE around 1 a.m. on Friday, June 21.

Patrol officers from the MPD's Seventh District arrived at the scene where they discovered the victim suffering from numerous stab wounds. Paramedics transported the victim to Prince George's Hospital Center, in Cheverly, Md., where she was admitted and remains in serious but stable condition.

According to local transgender activists Earline Budd, who knew the victim through her work at Transgender Health Empowerment, and Ruby Corado, who visited the victim in the hospital, the victim knew her attacker.

MPD announced the morning the arrest of 23-year-old Michael McBride of Southeast D.C., who has been charged with assault with intent to kill.

Records from D.C. Superior Court show that McBride was previously arrested on a charge of robbery and was scheduled to appear in court for that charge on June 28. As of 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, court records had not been updated to indicate whether McBride had been arraigned on the charges or scheduled for a preliminary hearing.

Area LGBT activists were critical of MPD in the days following the stabbing, claiming the police were not forthcoming with information about the case, such as whether an arrest had been made, or in issuing alerts so that members of the transgender community could take precautions.

Budd, along with The DC Center, the city's LGBT community center; the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance (GLAA); Gays and Lesbians Opposing Violence (GLOV), a program of The DC Center; and the D.C. Trans Coalition (DCTC), announced Wednesday they will be holding a community meeting and press conference at The DC Center, at 1318 U St. NW, Friday, June 28, at 5:30 p.m., to address some of those concerns about police protocol and community notification.

A recently posted video that's gone viral shows a violent altercation involving a gay man who works as a drag entertainer and two women, which occurred over the weekend at a D.C. restaurant. Initially posted to YouTube, the video shows the man being struck and dragged by his hair in what might be considered a crime motivated by anti-gay bias.

The man in the video, Miles DeNiro, who performs as Heidi Glüm, had just finished performing in a monthly show known as ''Gay Bash'' at the Black Cat on 14th Street NW around 2 a.m., Sunday, June 23, when he entered Manny & Olga's pizza and take-out restaurant.

DeNiro told Metro Weekly that two women – shown in the video appearing as a black woman and an adult Latina – started criticizing him and touching his face.

''They were jealous of my shoes, my makeup, saying I didn't know how to put it on,'' DeNiro said. ''They started touching my face, and I said, 'Do not touch me.' The black girl pushed me, I pushed her back, she swung at me, I spit in her face.''

The video recording the incident was posted online by a user known as ''Rick Ross'' and has been branded with ''WorldStarHipHop.com,'' referring to a hip-hop site that features a variety of videos, which run the gamut from music videos to fights to embarrassing sexual escapades. In the video, the women are seen attacking DeNiro, grabbing him by his hair and dragging him before two people appearing to be Manny & Olga's employees separate them.

DeNiro told Metro Weekly that the women attacked him twice, although the video only shows one attack. DeNiro said the women were being ''egged on'' by several men, including the camera operator, who at one point turns the camera on himself and yells while filming the fight.

''The men were just standing around, saying, 'That's a dude. Beat his ass,''' DeNiro said.

The video shows DeNiro bleeding from his head, trying to stanch the wound with a pack of napkins as he and the black woman continue to yell at each other.

According to DeNiro, no one involved contacted the police at the time of the incident, including other drag entertainers at the scene.

''They were afraid to step in,'' DeNiro said. ''I can't really blame them.''

DeNiro said he waited for his order and took it out of the restaurant, where the two women yelled at him again.

''I thought they were going to attack me a third time, but they didn't. They just stood around and yelled anti-gay slurs, like 'faggot' and 'tranny,''' DeNiro said.

While the video has since been removed from YouTube for violating policy on ''shocking and disgusting content,'' it remains active on WorldStarHipHop.com.

DeNiro said he filed a police report with the Metropolitan Police Department's Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit (GLLU) Monday night and that the officers told him they had filed it as a simple assault and hate crime. DeNiro also said police told him they were going to Manny & Olga's to check the store's surveillance video footage as part of the investigation.

An MPD public-information officer confirmed Tuesday that the two women have filed their own police report detailing their account of the incident. The case remains under investigation.

With focus on the Supreme Court’s upcoming release of opinions in two cases, one challenging the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the other challenging California’s Proposition 8 ban on same-sex marriage, the Very Rev. Gary Hall, dean of the Washington National Cathedral, said today that a related evening prayer service will be held Wednesday, June 26, at 7 p.m.

Prior to the service, Hall will be joined by various faith leaders who will speak in support of marriage equality at a press conference, to be held at 5 p.m. outside the cathedral’s main entrance on Wisconsin Avenue NW. Those faith leaders expected attend: the Rev. Dennis Wiley, pastor of Covenant Baptist United Church of Christ; Franci DeBernardo, executive director of New Ways Ministry; and the Rev. Dwayne Johnson, senior pastor of the Metropolitan Community Church of Washington, D.C.

“The freedom to marry the person you love is not only a Constitutional right. It’s a moral right,” Hall said in a statement. “As a straight man, my church and my government have given me those rights. Those of use from churches and synagogues and mosques are saying: our faith communities are ready to extend those rights to everyone. It’s time for government to do the same.”

Following the legalization of same-sex marriage in Maryland last year, with approval from the Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, the bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, the cathedral formally announced its decision to celebrate same-sex marriages, placing it on the liberal side of an ongoing struggle between various factions within the Episcopal Church, largely over social issues.

''Coming together as brothers and sisters, friends and allies, supporters of equal rights can draw strength from one another, be reminded of God's abiding love, and work through complex feelings about an issue of personal importance at the center of this national debate,'' read an earlier statement released by the cathedral announcing initial plans for this event to be held in July. ''As a long period of expectation continues, the Cathedral adds its hopes to yours for victories to come.''

[EDITOR'S NOTE: As originally posted, this story listed two possible dates for a similar event at the Washington National Cathedral, July 1 and 3. Those originally announced plans have been amended in favor of the June 26 event.]

From our dear friend  Alex Bernardes at Via G (Revistaviag.com) Magazine in Brazil :  Our Brazilian constitution states that this is a local country, therefore, anyone who is elected by the people and takes a political chair, is not allowed to use his religious concepts and beliefs to conduct or change people’s behavior. Unfortunately, that is true only in the books.

Recently, a pastor called Marco Feliciano (Minister of an Evangelical Church Franchise in Brazil), was elected by his peers â€" people weren't able to interfere in that process because it was done undercover â€", and, once taking charge as the president of the Human Rights ‘Deputy’ Chamber, he started to promote intolerance, discrimination, segregation towards some specific groups of doomed and unluckily borned people (his words, based in the Old Testament).

He mainly points to Negros and gays. Now, he wants to pass a bill which allows the “cure for gays”, considering that “these people may want to be healed and live a “normal” life”, and he threatens anyone who tries to interfere or be in his way. Our state of freedom, equality and fraternity is now going down the drain...

As you worldwide friends may know, we are in the core of a revolution for real human rights in Brazil, asking for more important things such as better public educational, health and transportation systems. We really don’t need this kind of people around us to blur people’s real interests. If you are sympathetic to our manifestations, please “like” it and share.

Let the world know about this shame...

The Supreme Court's decisions on two same-sex marriage laws have begun. The Defense of Marriage Act has been ruled unconstitutional.

The Defense of Marriage Act, the law barring the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages legalized by the states, is unconstitutional, the Supreme Court ruled Wednesday by a 5-4 vote.

"The federal statute is invalid, for no legitimate purpose overcomes the purpose and effect to disparage and to injure those whom the State, by its marriage laws, sought to protect in personhood and dignity,” Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in the majority opinion. “By seeking to displace this protection and treating those persons as living in marriages less respected than others, the federal statute is in violation of the Fifth Amendment.”

Here is the opinion finding no standing in the Prop 8 case, Hollingsworth v Perry, written by chief justice Roberts.

Held: Petitioners did not have standing to appeal the District Court’s order. [...]

Petitioners have no roleâ€"special or otherwiseâ€"in its enforcement. They therefore have no “personal stake” in defending its enforcement that is distinguishable from the general interest of every California citizen.

The justices are expected to issue a ruling WEDNESDAY  on Proposition 8: California's ban on same sex marriage.

Supporters  in the California are planning a rally when the ruling comes down, and local businesses are gearing up for the possibility of a BIG WIN on Prop 8!

Both Gregory Goodman and Alan Kelly have a love of flowers, and each other.
They married in 2008 in the the brief window that same-sex marriage was legal.

"So we're down there in Mexico in May and they decided to make it legal in the United States, in California. So we were like uh oh, we have to do a wedding here too," said Gregory, owner of My Little Flower Shop.

"Well when our families found out that we got married in Mexico, they all went you can't get married without us there," said Alan.

"When the Supreme Court rules, it means many more people could be walking down the aisle, My Little Flower Shop already has bookings for July and August.

"We are looking for probably a 50 percent jump in business, we are actually putting in a warehouse very soon just to get ready for it," said Gregory.

My Little flower shop is expanding to try to keep up with demand, and some hotels in California are booking up as well!

The moment many of us have been waiting for!

WEDNESDAY, June 26th, 2013, just in time for pride!  The Supreme Court will announce their decision on DOMA  and  PROP  8!

The U.S. Supreme Court did not release rulings on either Proposition 8 or the Defense of Marriage Act today. The court said it will convene again tomorrow, Wednesday,  at 7 a.m. for the last time this term to issue its remaining decisions. Presumably, those will include rulings on the same-sex marriage cases.

The Supreme Court of the United States of America made two monumental rulings on Wednesday making June’s Gay Pride celebration a bit sweeter!  The highest court in the country overturned the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and upheld a prior court ruling that California’s ban on gay marriage (known as Proposition 8) is unconstitutional. The [...]

Just about everything about this show is charming. To begin with, the underlying concept: the play is indirectly about Barbra Streisand’s “elegant barn”, the main subject of her book A Passion for Design.
