Los Angeles County's Fourth Gay Mayor Elected to Office

It’s probably not earth shaking news that a city in California has elected an openly gay mayor to office. After all he’s not the first. According to the Pasadena Star-News, there are currently three other openly gay mayors in Los Angeles County: Mayor John Heilman of the City of West Hollywood, Manhattan Beach Mayor Mitch Ward, and Redondo Beach Mayor Mike Gin.

So, at first, when I read an article stating Joe Mosca is Sierra Madre’s first openly gay mayor I didn’t think it such a big deal. In fact Joe Mosca even states that his sexual orientation is not a big deal when he said "the fact is you don't see yourself as any different than anyone else and what you have as different than anybody else."

In his acceptance speech Mosca acknowledged his partner of eight years, Dr. Matt Bosse, their son, Garrett, who turns 3 later this month and his parents who were visiting from Rhode Island.

"I'd also like to thank my partner Matt, who is absolutely my strength in life and always gives me the ability to focus on what's important in life and my son Garrett, the little red-head right there who is up past his bedtime," he said. "Just one look in his eyes and his smile, it just really kind of makes you feel like the world is perfect."

When I read these words I was happy and jealous at the same time. I am so happy for him, his partner and Garrett. I’m happy for a world which has progressed to this point. I’m happy in his part of the world Mayor Mosca feels safe and secure. Although I am so very happy our world has evolved, I’m jealous the world wasn’t so evolved when I was that age.
Evidently my feelings are in line with those of others. Tedd Hamm, who has lived in Sierra Madre for 22 years, said he had no thoughts on the matter.
"Not as long as he's doing a good job," he said. Then he added: "Isn't that a change from 30 years ago from what I would have said? Times have changed and I hope I have, too."
