In recent news a man brought up Ricky Martin’s recent coming out. He stated Ricky could possibly be someone for gay youngsters to look up to. The man stated “People like Martin will give young people the chance to see they can still be happy and successful, even if they are gay.”
Of course I hope the man is right. But quite frankly I don’t see it that way at all.
Obviously Ricky Martin didn’t think he could advance his career if he came out earlier and he’s probably right. This reflects on both Martin and society in general.
But the message Ricky sends is that you need to stay in the closet until you have made enough money to support yourself. Personally, I don’t see this as a positive message at all.
As I have previously stated I would have much more respect for Ricky Martin had he come out long ago. I’m not saying I don’t respect him because I do. Just not as much as I would had he come out long ago.
